Our Story

  • 1935

    A.J. “Al” Schneider used the proceeds from the sale of the family car to buy his first truck.

  • 1938

    Purchased Bins Transfer & Storage, incorporated the company (June 6) and changed the name to Schneider Transport & Storage. Moved offices to a building once used as a horse stable.

  • 1944

    Schneider discontinued storing household goods, although “Storage” wasn't dropped from the name until the 1960s.

  • 1958

    Schneider was granted its first interstate authority by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC). The first shipment was for Procter & Gamble (P&G) from its plant in Green Bay, Wis., to another P&G facility in Cheboygan, Mich.

  • 1961

    Don Schneider, Al's son, joined the company as manager, bringing the office staff to five.

  • 1962

    Schneider Transport logo adopted.

  • 1964

    Schneider Transport merged with Packer City Transport.

  • 1968

    Garrison Transport merged into Schneider Transport Inc. and was added to Schneider's operating authority.

  • 1969

    Purchased Kampo Transit, a 50-truck regional milk and fuel oil hauler.

  • 1970

    Milestone grant of authority from the ICC to haul paper and paper products – a significant part of the Schneider portfolio to this day.

  • 1971

    Purchased TransNational Truck (TNT) of Amarillo, Texas. Departing from previous practice of incorporating all acquisitions into Schneider Transport, TNT remained a separate business unit.

  • 1974

    Purchased National Refrigerated Transport (NRT) of Tulsa, Okla.

  • 1975

    Installed a state-of-the-art computerized control system light-years ahead of the competition.

    Hired the company’s first field sales representative.

  • 1976

    Don Schneider named president of the company.

    Teamsters called a “wildcat” strike on Schneider Transport.

    Purchased National Bulk Transport and changed the name to Schneider Bulk Carriers. The acquisition expanded the company’s portfolio to include national tanker service.

    The holding company, Schneider National, Inc., was formed.

  • 1977

    The first bulk fuel site was installed at the Wise Garage in Dayton, Ohio.

    Christensen Oil was purchased to provide sufficient fuel of the appropriate quality.

  • 1979

    The second OPEC fuel crisis caused gas rationing and fuel shortages. Schneider Transport responded with a national miles-per-gallon campaign through the Schneider Fuel School, teaching 2,000 drivers to drive 55 miles per hour to conserve fuel.

  • 1980

    Congress passed the Motor Carrier Act of 1980, which provided for sweeping deregulation of the trucking industry.

  • 1981

    ICC granted Schneider 48-state authority to carry all commodities except explosives and bulk.

  • 1982

    To leverage the long-distance network needed for the growing number of drivers, Schneider formed Schneider Communications to provide long-distance telephone service to customers in the Midwest.

    Schneider National established its charitable arm, the Schneider National Foundation, to create a positive force for change in the communities where its associates live and work.

  • 1983

    Schneider Family Fitness Event initiated in Green Bay, Wis.

    Founder Al Schneider died.

  • 1984

    Purchased International Transport, Inc. of Rochester, Minn., the largest flatbed and heavy-haul products company in the United States.

  • 1985

    Schneider National Carriers formed by joining all of the separate business units purchased through the 70s and 80s. Schneider National Carriers is non-union, but Schneider Transport remained a union carrier under agreement with the Teamsters.

  • 1986

    Schneider became the first carrier to install two-way satellite communication systems in all 6,000 over-the- road trucks.

    Introduced Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) transactions.

  • 1988

    Schneider Moving & Storage sold.

  • 1989

    Schneider National Carriers obtained authority to haul in the Canadian provinces of Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.

  • 1990

    Opened Canadian office.

    International Transport’s name changed to Schneider Specialized Carriers.

  • 1991

    Schneider National launched intermodal service offering.

  • 1992

    Company achieved $1 billion in annual revenue for the first time.

    Corporate headquarters moved to the Customer Service and Corporate Business Center at 3101 South Packerland Drive in Green Bay, Wis.

    Opened Mexico office.

  • 1993

    Schneider Logistics, Inc., created.

  • 1994

    Schneider Logistics awarded the General Motors Service Parts Operation contract. This is the largest logistics industry contract ever awarded.

  • 1995

    Schneider Communications sold to Frontier Communications.

    Schneider Dedicated conducted largest-ever private fleet conversion for Kimberly-Clark.

  • 1996

    Schneider National surpassed $2 billion in annual revenue.

  • 1997

    Opened office in Venlo, the Netherlands.

  • 1998

    Purchased Highway Carrier Corporation.

    Purchased Builders Transport.

    Purchased Landstar Poole.

    Schneider National earned first ISO certification (ISO 9002:1994).

  • 2000

    Purchased Tranzact Payment Service.

  • 2002

    Christopher Lofgren named president and CEO on August 2, 2002, succeeding Don Schneider.

  • 2004

    Schneider National surpassed $3 billion in annual revenue.

  • 2005

    Schneider Logistics acquired American Port Services and Powers Transportation Services.

  • 2006

    Schneider Logistics opened office in Shanghai, China and began offering supply chain consulting services.

    Schneider Logistics acquired American Overseas Air Freight to become the first truckload carrier to offer door-to-door international logistics services.

    Schneider Payment Services sold to US Bank.

    Schneider Specialized sold to Maverick USA.

    Introduced Mexico Express Intermodal service, providing access to Mexico’s prime industrial center.

    Schneider National earned its first SmartWay Excellence Award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The award, earned for demonstrating leadership in conserving energy and for lowering greenhouse gas emissions from its transportation and freight activities, is given by the U.S. EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership.

  • 2007

    Schneider National granted authority to operate as a domestic carrier and logistics services provider in the People’s Republic of China, making Schneider the first North American truckload provider to establish a domestic business in China.

    Schneider National welcomed its first Ride of Pride, military-themed truck into its fleet.

    Schneider Logistics acquired the key operating assets of Bayoun Logistics in the People’s Republic of China.

    Schneider National Foundation reached charitable milestone, donating $1 million in cash, equipment, in- kind transportation services and other contributions internationally.

  • 2008

    Schneider rolled out new Regional service offering.

    Schneider National became most energy-efficient fleet in the industry when it reduced its fleet of 10,600 company drivers to 60 mph.

    American Chemistry Council named Schneider Logistics a Responsible Care Partner. This voluntary global initiative is practiced in 53 countries with the goal of more efficiently managing and communicating environmental, health, safety and security issues beyond what is required by the government.

    The United States Environment Protection Agency recognized Schneider Logistics as a SmartWay Transport Partner.

  • 2009

    Schneider National recognized with the Daniel H. Wagner Award for Excellence in Operations Research for the development of a tactical planning simulator, an innovative planning tool that allows Schneider to study the impact of policy, network and driver hiring strategies.

    Schneider Logistics, Inc. divested its Olomouc, Czech Republic operation to EXL Service Holdings, Inc.

    Schneider completed conversion of intermodal fleet to a container-only fleet.

    Schneider National drivers delivered the company’s safest year in company history.

  • 2010

    Schneider National realized its most award-winning year. The Enterprise collected 43 awards for its strong customer service, solutions and commitment to the environment from shippers, government organizations and industry media.

    Twenty years after making in-cab satellite technology an industry standard, the nation’s largest truckload carrier upgraded its mobile communications to improve truck driver safety, productivity and quality of life.

    Fleet Owner magazine named Schneider National its Green Fleet of the Year.

    Schneider National completed Regional service rollout; offering available nationwide within five regions.

    American Trucking Associations presented Schneider National with the Excellence in Security Award.

    Schneider National celebrated 75 years as a premier provider of transportation and logistics services enhancing the standard of living worldwide.

    Schneider driver Mark DeSotel achieved safe driving milestone: 4 million consecutive miles driven, accident free. DeSotel is the third driver in company history to reach this milestone.

    Schneider Logistics sold its freight forwarding and customs house brokerage business in the U.S. and China to Norbert Dentressangle.

  • 2011

    Schneider National Bulk Carriers launched Energy Transportation Services providing inbound commodities and outbound condensate hauling from oil fields.

    Schneider launched Intermodal Canadian Broker Crossing service for North American shippers.

  • 2012

    Don Schneider, chairman emeritus and former president and CEO of Schneider National, Inc., passed away on Jan. 13.

    Schneider National commemorated 20th Anniversary of its Formal Military Recruitment program.

    Driver associate Gary Lautenslager retired as the company’s longest tenured driver after a 44-year career behind the wheel.

    Launched Bulk Intermodal Trailer service, becoming the first in the industry to offer a bulk tanker-trailer that can be used interchangeably over the road and on the rail.

    Schneider created company-owned and managed chassis fleet within Intermodal division.

    25,000th Schneider Freightliner tractor rolled off the assembly line.

    Schneider National ranked #10 on GI Jobs Top Military Friendly Employers list.

  • 2014

    Schneider National changed logo and started doing business simply as Schneider.

    Schneider Haul of Fame introduced; first class of 179 drivers inducted for elite safe driving status (3 million consecutive safe miles and/or 20 years of safe driving).

    Schneider driver Bob Wyatt achieved safe driving milestone: 4 million consecutive miles driven, accident free. Bob is only the fifth driver in company history to reach this milestone.

    Schneider received keys to its seventh military-themed truck and is home to the largest fleet of Ride of Pride trucks in the industry.

  • 2015

    Company achieved $4 billion in annual revenue for the first time.

    Schneider introduced Montreal Direct, a new intermodal lane via Montreal that services shippers in Canada and the Southeastern U.S.

    Driver associate Rodney Owen achieved safe driving milestone: 4 million consecutive miles driven, accident-free.

    13 drivers are inducted into the Schneider Haul of Fame.

    Schneider hits — and then surpasses — a unique milestone: At least 5,000 company drivers have obtained 1 million safe miles.

    Schneider received its highest rank ever (#8) on GI Jobs’ Top Military-Friendly Employers list.

  • 2016

    Schneider becomes the nation's leading first-to-final-mile-delivery provider of LTL, truckload and logistics for high-value home furnishings and over-dimensional goods when it simultaneously acquires Lodeso and Watkins & Shepard. These acquisitions complement the company's growing Final Mile+ service.

    Driver associate Bob Wyatt becomes the second person ever to win the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s International Driver Excellence Award for his exceptional career and commitment to public safety.

    24 drivers are inducted into the Schneider Haul of Fame.

    Schneider received the keys to its 10th military-themed truck (eight U.S. and two Canadian) and is home to the largest fleet of Ride of Pride trucks in the industry.

    Schneider earned National Safety Council's prestigious Green Cross for Safety Excellence Award.

    Company begun to spec diesel auxiliary power units(APUs) on trucks that drive primarily in the Southern U.S. states.

    Intermodal division's conversion to a company-owned an damaged chassis fleet is completed, with more than 15,000 Intermodal container chassis purchased.

    Roll-out of Samsung Galaxy tablets devices began, improving the driver experience both in and out of the truck.

    Schneider earned VIQTORY's 2020 Military Friendly Employer Award.
